Starting Your Own Scrapbook Club

Before I discovered the world of scrapbooking, I was inexplicably drawn to my local office supply store. I loved to stand in an aisle surrounded by the different colors of copy paper. And the pens!

At the time, I thought this was really strange. (So did my family). And then I discovered that there are a lot of people who share this fascination. I realized that there is an entire industry that caters to my obsession with patterned paper and coordinating embellishments.

Then I discovered that these people also form clubs where they get together, share ideas, and eat chocolate. What could be better?

Scrapbooking clubs are the quilting bees of the modern era. When you join ? or form ? a scrapbook group, you create a regular time to meet with creative, loving, and family-centered friends.

Carving out a regular time to meet is an ideal way to create and maintain these meaningful friendships. Plus, as everyone gets together to work with family photographs and poignant memories, conversations tend to be deep and meaningful, too.

You can start your own scrapbooking club by asking yourself these questions:

--> How often do you want to meet?
How frequently do you want to hold group meetings (or crops)? Weekly, twice-monthly, monthly?

It's best to get a consensus from group members as to which day works best, as well as which time of day. Will you need child care ? and how many people will be pitching in for the sitter? How many people do you want in your scrapbook club?

The group dynamic varies greatly if you have 12 people, versus 30 or more. Decide in advance how many people you think will comprise an ideal group. Do you want an intimate gathering of friends ? or the energy of a larger collaboration?

--> Where do you want to host the crop?
You can start out at your home, if you have the space. Or you can ask if the scrapbookers in your club would like to rotate houses.

For larger groups, consider churches, community centers, or conference rooms. Often churches and businesses will be very receptive to providing space for this type of gathering. Scrapbooking is a fun, family-oriented activity, which places of worship and community centers generally love to embrace.

--> Do you want to charge membership dues?
If you have to pay for your scrapbooking space, you'll probably want to recoup those costs. If you are going to provide instruction (or food or a babysitter) - simply charge reasonable dues from each member to cover your costs. Many scrapbookers are accustomed to paying for this type of scrap space.

--> What will you serve?
You can serve food - or not. I like to keep things really simple. I have a simple basket of cold Evian bottles - which I stock up on when there's a sale.

The best foods to serve don't leave anything behind, so stay away from anything that would make it necessary for guests to wash their hands with each bite. If you're going to serve finger food, use toothpicks. And ? for the chocolate fix - M&Ms are wonderful because they really do melt in your mouth and not in your hand.

--> How structured would you like your meetings to be?
Some scrapbooking clubs will invite Instructors to teach a variety of more advanced techniques. Check with your local scrapbooking store and direct sales consultants to see which classes might be available.

Tip: You ? or one of your club members ? might want to consider becoming a consultant yourself in order to supply the group with product and training in the latest techniques (direct sales consulants often receive this training from their teams and from the company themselves, ie. http://www.momscape.com/scrapbooking/business.htm ) Then you can earn a profit and the club can earn and share the free hostess rewards. Free scrapbooking goodies for all! Or you can schedule your crop around a monthly scrapbooking club kit, ie.: http://www.momscape.com/scrapbooking/scrapbook-club It's fun to see the different projects that each club member comes up with, using the same supplies. Plus, some monthly club kits(like the one cited above) come with idea sheets and an artist/designer gallery of club creations.

--> What is the best way to set up the meeting space?
Make sure the lighting is adequate and that each guest has enough table space. You can set everyone up on your dining room table, or ? if you have the space, create a more elaborate configuration. One idea I found on the Two Peas in a Bucket (http://www.twopeasinabucket.com) message board is to create a square from 2 8-foot tables and 2 6-foot tables. This configuration will comfortably accommodate 8 scrapbookers.

It's fun to have some community tools on one table, too. I have the basics: trimmers, Coluzzle, Silent Eyelet Setter, a mini sewing machine, etc.

I also like to bring a selection of my favorite idea books and scrapbooking magazines, especially those that feature seasonal project ideas.

And place a small gift bag or paper lunch sack in the center of each table for little scraps. This goes a long way in helping to keep each workspace organized and clutter-free. You can also set a relaxing (or energizing) mood with your choice of soft background music.

--> How will you find club members?
If you don't already have a group of scrapbooking friends (or you want to find more), simply announce your group in the community.

Word of mouth is the best way to do this. Ask your scrapbooking friends to bring their scrapbooking friends to the club meetings.

You can also post flyers and announcements on community bulletin boards in libraries, grocery stores, community centers, etc.

Check to see if your local newspaper will run a free ad in the Community Notes section before each scheduled crop. For example: "Free Scrapbooking Crop. All levels of experience welcome. Instructor/designer on hand to answer questions and provide instruction. Come have fun and meet new friends. Time and location. Your contact info."

You can also send email invites to all your friends. Evite.com (http://www.evite.com) is a great tool for keeping track of invitees. Simply pitch your crop night as a "girls' night out" (or "mom's night out") where you'll get important things done (and it never hurts to let them know you'll have chocolate on hand.)

Have a great time meeting new scrapbooking friends and inspiring one another to complete cards, layouts, and gifts-from-the-heart in your new scrapbooking club.

About the author:
Susie Cortright is the founder of Momscape's Scrapbooking Playground. An Introduction to Lanyards

Lanyards are pieces of rope, wire, or cloth specifically designed to attach to objects. They are typically used to secure small items such as a work badge, key, identification card, eyeglasses, whistle, cell phone, bottle opener, knife, or compass. A lanyard can be worn around the neck, arm, waist or wrist. When worn around the wrist, a lanyard is often referred to as a "wristlet."

One typical use of a lanyard is to wear it looped around the neck to secure and display an object that is frequently needed. Securing the object with a neck lanyard keeps it readily available for use, provides easy access to the object, and keeps the hands free. In a business environment, many employees choose to wear lanyards around the neck to display an identification badge or secure keys. A lanyard may also be attached to a belt loop to allow the secured object to be tucked into a pocket.

There are as many lanyard styles available and there are many uses for them. People who like to differentiate themselves from the "norm" can have a lanyard custom printed or personalized. A lanyard can be as simple and inexpensive as a 3/8" shoelace style cord or as extravagant as a wire strung with expensive crystals and gemstones.

Lanyards are available for purchase through a plethora of suppliers, and many can be found online. The lanyard business is booming, as many large businesses continue to purchase lanyards by the thousands for their employees. Even when custom printed with company names, logos, symbols, or slogans, lanyards are relatively inexpensive. They serve as an effective and convenient source of advertising when worn at trade shows or given away for promotional purposes.

Lanyards have become increasingly popular for their ability to keep important objects close at hand while simultaneously keeping hands free.

Lanyards Info provides information on printed, custom, beaded, badge, neck, key lanyards, and cell phone accessories and jewelry.

The Most Powerful Attribute in Antiques and Collectibles

What can increase your sales volume and make you more productive day in and day out? You've probably heard this three word statement that seperates those who wish they could do better, from those who really do.

Knowledge is power!

This three word statement is more than just a great philosophy. The more knowledge you have about antiques, the higher the increase in your overall profitability...as long as you use that knowledge. Knowledge can literally make or break your antique business.

Here's a difficult lesson that was taught to a high-minded museum by a shrewd, savvy antique buyer with knowledge.

I love this story! It vividly illustrates the difference between knowing and being in the dark about antiques and their value. I was browing in an antique shop a number of years ago, when I struck up a conversation with the owner. We talked about incredible finds that we had stumbled across over the years. Her story topped anything that I had ever done...hands down!

It all started when she attended the last day of a weekend sale at a local museum. It seems that the museum was desiring to remodel, and they were attempting to raise needed funds by selling off some antiques that had been found in the carriage barn that stood on the property. Obviously, she was not expecting to see anything spectacular because she assumed that the sale would be "cherry-picked".

And then it happened!

While walking through the sale, she discovered a large painting with a faded gold frame. Something about the painting looked strangely familiar, and she thought to herself, "I've seen that in a history book somewhere."

She quickly ran to her vehicle and poured over several large painting identification books that she had brought with her from her personal library. After taking 10 minutes to research, she was almost positive that this painting was a rare item indeed. She went back inside, and with a few minutes left in the sale, she wrote a personal check for $125. and loaded it into her station wagon.

Life took a sudden and drastic turn...for the better!

Upon arriving home, she began to dig deeper with her research tools. She "burned the midnight oil", and as morning broke, her heart was beating faster as she came to the realization that this painting was something very special.

The next morning, after more phone calls and cross-checking, she gingerly loaded the painting and took it to a temperature controlled vault in the same city where she urchased it. This $125. painting later sold for several million dollars at a major auction house, and this woman's financial future was changed in dramatic fashion literally overnight.

The museum curator was appalled, overwhelmed and completely flabbergasted!

Imagine that you are the curator of this museum, and you placed the $125. price tag on this million dollar painting! This tag sale had been held to raise money for projects around the museum. If the curator had only possessed the knowledge to even "check it out", the outcome could have been far more positive for the establishment that he represented!

Knowledge and research made all the difference.

Aside from the curator, think of all the antique dealers, collectors and enthusiasts that had toured this weekend-long tag sale. Here was an item that could change their entire lives financially, and they walked right on by. any one of them could have sold the painting, banked the money, and just "fiddled" around with antiques instead of trying to make a living from them. And the difference was knowledge!

How to get antique knowledge.

With the advent of the Internet, research is easier to do, and the knowledge is much easier to come by. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of sites that are dedicated to various collectibles, art and antiques.

Visiting the library all day, once a month can be one of the best ways to increase your knowledge of antique items. The library is still one of the most untapped resources for gaining expertise on a variety of antique subjects. Talk to the librarian, ask questions, and dig! The human mind is like a sponge, and someday you may need what you are learning today.

A methodical approach toward research and gaining knowledge can pay huge dividends in your antique world. It's the secret that can make a huge impact in the buying decisions that you make!

Michael Temple is a retired auctioneer, speaker and the owner of Antique Power Dealers, an antique and collectible business resource. How I Spent My Summer Vacation

The song says it all, "Hot Fun in the Summertime." Our summer was certainly full of fun: outdoor barbeques, neighborhood cookouts, making ice cream, 4th of July parades, a trip to grandpa's house, sleeping late, moving my oldest daughter into her first apartment? It never seems like the season is long enough to do everything we want to do.

Now that the summer is almost over, how do we preserve these memories? Take a few minutes before the busy routine of school begins to put together a family album of summer keepsakes. Whether it's in a scrapbook, photo album, or shoebox, these mementoes chronicle tidbits of family life that often become lasting traditions. Your kids will love showing friends and family how they spent their summer vacation.

Want a quick and easy way to make a time capsule of your summer vacation? Make a keepsake jar.

Find a large, clean, wide mouth jar (mayonnaise jars work well) to hold your treasures. Paint and decorate the lid.

Gather together pictures, ticket stubs, sea shells, maps, souvenirs, pressed flowers or anything that has sentimental value from you summer vacation.

Write names and dates on the back of photographs. Place all of your items inside the jar. On brightly colored paper, write a few notes about each event. You may want to interview other family members for their thoughts as well.

Preserve your summer stories in a place of honor. Kids will enjoy getting their keepsake jar down to tell stories for many summers to come.

And, don't forget to snap a picture on the first day of school. We take a photograph in the same spot every year. My daughter is leaving for her first year of college. In the opening pages of her scrapbook are all of the pictures we had taken on the first day of school. From the scared preschooler with the little lamb name tag, to the confident, beautiful young woman she blossomed into, each picture was truly worth a thousand words.

About the Author: Rondi Hillstrom Davis is the co-author of the award-winning book Together: Creating Family Traditions. Embroidery Basting Frames Use for Stabilizing Designs

Using a basting frame around designs can do a great deal to help prevent fabric puckers around a design, aid in positioning multiple or split designs and it's the best way to trap the fabric and stabilizer at the start! You will need editing software for this, but for best results, resize the frames to fit as close to the design as possible. It's also possible to use a basting frame even if you don?t have embroidery software to combine the frame with a design. Just open the frame in your machine & stitch it; open the design and stitch it.

You will find basting frames that are ready for you to use by going to the Basic Embroidery tutorial page on our web site. I have provided these frames for use instead of hoops or to help secure larger, full filled designs. There are 3 sizes; 4x4, 5x7 & 6x10. If your machine has other sizes simply open the basting frame file and resize it, then Center the frame & save under a new file name [the size you changed it to]. Download, find your format & enjoy!

If you have embroidery software and only want to use the frames for making sure the design you're creating stays within your actual embroidery field size;

Open the basting frame first; if combining in software.

Import or open the artwork for your design; add to open basting frame in software.

In your software, move the frame until it's has about the same margin all around if needed.

Start digitizing using the 2nd color on your program?s Color Bar. Your design will stitch the frame first if you leave it, however you can simply edit past the first color when you're at the machine.

If you want to stitch the frame for design security & less fabric "pull", the stitches are easily removed when the design is finished by clipping the bobbin stitches about every 1.5 inches. The top thread will then pull off very easily.

If you would like to create your own basting frames:

Choose the single line stitch tool in your digitizing program.

Holding the Ctrl key down, start at the top left corner of the design area & place the 1st stitch point; move to the right corner & place the 2nd stitch point, lower right for the 3rd stitch point, lower left for the 4th stitch point and back to the top left for the last stitch point.

Go to properties; set stitch length for 4.50 to 5.0 mm; lock stitches if you have this feature.

Resize the frame to the desired measurements; remember to make this frame slightly smaller than the maximum size of your embroidery sewing field!

Save the frame file by naming the file as the size of the frame & the brand machine it's for.

Sandy Carter is the author of embroidery articles at embroidery designs by Thread Artist. How to Use Textured Paper and Book Jacket Backgrounds to Give Your Scrapbook Dimension

Textured paper can add extra dimension to your scrapbooking page. Textured paper can be used to highlight focus items on your scrapbook page. Textured paper can also be used as a backgrounds or border to give your page an interesting fresh look.

Textured paper is available in a variety of textures and colors and is available in most craft and office supply stores.

For an added personal touch and artist flair use a book jacket as a background. This scrapbook technique looks especially nice when the book jacket is the reader's favorite book or author, adding a wonderful personalized touch.

Be aware, however, that the glossy coating on the book jacket creates an added challenge to sticking objects to this background. Alternative attachment methods include sewing and eyelets.

One good way to add dimension to images is to use double stick foam tape. Double stick foam tape literally allows items to pop out at your reader adding realism to items. This technique is especially useful in children's art and educational scrapbooks.

Simply, cut the foam tape into whatever shape and size you want. Then, attach to shape onto your scrapbook page. Double stick foam tape is available at most craft stores in various colors and thicknesses.

Mia LaCron is the founder of 101-scrapbooking-tidbits.info - http://www.101-scrapbooking-tidbits.info - devoted to helping individuals record, store, and preserve their most cherished memories via the art of scrapbooking.

Old, New, Borrowed, and Blue: Unity Candle Craft Project

Something old, something new, something borrowed, and something blue. There are plenty of crafty brides out there looking for a unique design for their unity candle. They want something that is as special and unique as their wedding day. Many artists are ready and willing to custom make a Unity candle for an eager bride - and charge anywhere from $30 to $200 - and that's not with any gold-plating or diamonds set into it!

As an alternative, take some of the "momentos" from your upcoming wedding - perhaps a copy of your invitation, some ribbon or tulle to match the gown and do it yourself! This project is as simple or as complex as you make it out to be, and you're only restricted by your imagination. The best part about this candle is that it will never burn away! We will embed a tealight in the top of the pillar so that you only have to replace the tealight when it burns out. Ultimately you will have a lasting momento of your special day that you've made.

You will need:

7-9" pillar candle
2 clear-cup tealight candles
1 pencil
1 teaspoon
1 tape measure
1 hot glue gun
as many items to decorate your candle as you see fit.

Choose a candle 7-9" tall and about 3" wide at the top. Round candles are easiest to decorate, but the candle must be at least 1/4" larger around than the tealight. Pick a candle that sits flat. We're going to carve out the top in a minute so that the tealight will nestle down inside. If you have unusual colors for your wedding, try finding a candle in a coordinating color.

Place the tealight cup in the center of the top of the pillar. Do your best to center it. Trace around the outside of the cup. Set the tealight aside. Measure the height of your tealight.

Using a warm spoon, melt out the wax around the wick of the pillar candle. We want to "carve" or melt out a space for the tealight to fit. Work slowly. It's easier to melt out extra wax than it is to add back wax. We can fill in with hot glue, but we'd rather not do that if we don't have to! Continue to melt down the interior of the candle, and trim away the wick, until you have reached the depth of your tea light cup height. Test your "well" by fitting the tealight cup into the space you are creating. Once it sits flush with the top of the pillar, you're all set!

Let your candle cool. Once we begin to decorate, you'll need to work quickly - especially if you're using High-temp hot glue. The softer your pillar candle, the more likely it will melt under the heat of your glue gun. Therefore, always apply the glue to to your decoration, not your candle. If you are applying many items - beads for example - allow the candle time to cool every 5-10 minutes to prevent melting.

Because the candle doesn't burn down, most any type of decoration can be used on the candle, including paper, cloth, etc. The wax should never drip, as it is contained in the tealight cup. This is a great and economical way to add a personal touch to your wedding ceremony. Some decorating suggestions:

1. Cut your invitation out in an oval or heart shape. Adhere it to the candle and edge the invitation with lace or ribbon.

2. Take beads that match your gown and push sequin pins or hatpins into the candle to hold them into place (no glue required).

3. Glue your picture on the candle and decorate with ribbon. This not only makes a wonderful momento for you, but a great gift for your wedding party, as a reminder of their role in your special day.

4. For my wedding, I took a new white pillar candle, spiraled old silver ribbon from the top to the bottom, then turned the candle over and spiraled pale blue ribbons in the opposite direction, creating a checkerboard effect. Then I glued blue and clear crystals borrowed from some old earrings in the center of each "square". Something old, new, borrowed and blue on a candle that will last for a lifetime!

Best of luck, and best wishes on your special day!

Lisa Robbin is the Director of Product Development for the giving candle, the maker of Heavenly Gems resin-based clear candles. Embroidery Digitizing Software

Embroidery Magic 2 software is very easy to use to make lettering, it is also easy to learn to use the digitizing part of the program but to digitize a good design takes learning, skill and practice. An example of what I am saying is that - for a artist to paint a picture, all it takes is some canvas, paint and brushes (these supplies and tools are easy for anyone to use but it takes learning, practice and artistic skill to paint a beautiful picture. The EM 2 program is easy to use but to digitize a good design takes learning, practice and skill.

By the way, one of the best ways to actually learn how to digitize a good design (not the same as how to use the software program) is to watch a good design stitch out and see/learn why the digitizer does this and that as the design stitches - we have lots of good designs (learning tools) as you may have noticed or our web site.

Embroidery Magic 2 is a "free standing digitizing software program - ie - it works on it's own on your computer" and saves designs on/to your computer in the dst format - dst is a standard format that converts well to almost any format or can be used directly by most software that sends a design to an embroidery machine via a memory card, floppy disk or direct connect. Most any software or boxes that send a design to a card and can use the dst format will work. If the software that sends the designs to the machine can use dst then conversion is not required, otherwise the design or lettering must be converted to a right format for the machine so it can be sent to a card or machine. There is a very good conversion program available for free if you need it. Just email us for the link after purchasing the EM 2 software.

Sandy Carter is the author of embroidery articles at embroidery designs by Thread Artist. Leather Work Tips

For leather work, consider the basics: an awl and spare point, a retractable X-acto knife and spare blades, a retractable knife with a break-off blade and a rotary punch. In addition, you'll need needles, a lump of beeswax and some waxed linen thread.

As well, a pair of pliers to pull the needle through the leather is a must, and scissors you can use for cutting the leather. Then there are edge slickers and bevellers that are used to finish the edges, drive punches for bigger holes and thong cutters for making laces. A T-square, compass and yardstick are essential to ensure that your leather work is measured accurately.

If you're just starting out with leather work, you might not want to spend a lot of money on tools. Once you've worked with the basic set and completed a few projects, you'll have a better idea of what tools work best and what you use most. At that point, a little research and some comparative shopping can lead you to acquiring some better quality tools that will enhance your leather work.

Of course, even the most expensive tools won't help if you haven't taken the time to develop and perfect your craft. If you do your very best with what you have, it doesn't matter if you can't afford the most expensive awl or the latest knife. Quality will show anyway.

Tips and Tricks:

* Start with a basic tool set.

* Buy better quality tools once you've completed some projects and have a better idea of what will enhance the quality of your leather work.

* Study the various types of leather before starting.

Tooling Leather

There are many different types of leather available, some better than others, depending upon the project you have in mind. Vegetable-tanned leather, also called tooling leather, has been processed using vegetable dyes rather than chemicals. It's usually flesh-colored and is excellent for a variety of projects, especially if the top is to be stamped or tooled.

Because it has a relatively rigid structure, this type of leather is ideal for leather work items like book covers and belts.

Latigo

Oil-tanned leather, also called latigo, unlike other leathers, has a waxy surface and is ideal for leather work projects where durability and flexibility are a must, such as for tack and saddles. Avoid using it though if you don't want the finished product to have stretch and flexibility, such as in dog collars. Bear in mind also that it can't be tooled or stamped.

Top Grain Leather

Top grain leather has one smooth side, called grain, which is the skin side, and a rough inner side, the flesh side. Either side can be used, rough or smooth.

Chrome-Tanned Leather

Chrome-tanned leather is dyed with modern chemicals such as chromium and comes in a variety of colors, is often white on one side, though the cut edges can be a different color than the facing. It's relatively inexpensive, but not very breathable, and can't be tooled or stamped because it's too soft for leather work and it's waterproof

Weight of Leather

Leather thickness is given in ounces. The heavier the weight, the thicker the leather is.

Calf or goat skin is generally 2 ounces or 1/32 inch thick. One ounce is 1/64th of an inch thick. On the other end of the scale, 8 ounce leather is usually 1/8 inch thick.

Summary:

* Tooling leather is the best choice for most leather work projects.

* Latigo leather is great for durables like tack and saddles.

* Choose suede and garment leather when making clothing.

* The heavier the weight of leather, the thicker it is.

* When ordering leather through the mail, try some sample swatches first.

* Keep your leather soft and supple with the proper oil.

Hey! Simple, and Stylish Wedding Reception Centerpiece: Craft Project

This simple, yet elegant table centerpiece is a great way to make a fancy "to do" at each table, without breaking the bank.

This is so easy, even a child can do it! I had my 8 year old son help me. For my own wedding, we picked up stemware at our local thrift stores. The idea wasn't to have every table look exactly the same, but rather for each table to be a variation on a theme. If you're looking for a more unified appearance, please make sure your count is accurate and buy everything you need at once, to ensure colors and shapes match.

For each centerpiece, you will need:

1 wine goblet, or other stemware
2 pieces of tulle 9-12" in width (either square or circle)
2 contrasting curling ribbons approximately 10-14" long
1-3 tea light candles (the 7-hour floating type)or other floating candles, depending on the width of the glass
water

1. Stack the tulle pieces. If you are using square pieces, turn one of the pieces so that you have an 8-point star shape. It will add more visual appeal to the finished project. You might consider using 2 diferent colored pieces of tulle to add a more dramatic appearance.

2. Center the glass on the tulle. We're about to tie the tulle around the base of the glass, but before we do, we need to get our ribbons ready.

3. Take the 2 lengths of ribbon and pull them together. Make sure they are not twisted. You want one color on the "inside" and the other on the "outside" so that when we tie them around the stem of the glass, we have a beautiful contrasting mix of color.

4. Pull up the tulle and secure it in place with the ribbon. Tie a knot to secure the ribbon to the stem. Now make a bow and pull the ribbons apart so that your bow has more volume. Curl the ends of your curling ribbon and arrange the curls around the base of the glass.

5. Fill your goblet with water. You might consider coloring your water with a bit of food coloring to match your wedding colors.

6. Float the candle(s) on top of the water. Light the candles as the reception begins. Look for long-burning floating candles. You don't want your candles burning out just as dinner ends. A single candle floating on water will gravitate to the edge of the glass. Try to find glasses big enough to float 2-4 candles safely. Too much heat may damage fragile stemware, so use caution.

For a more elegant look, arrange goblets of different heights on the same table or change the level of the water in each glass to create the illusion of height. You can also decorate your tulle with beads, or find tulle that is already adorned with sequins or beads. Use your imagination and create something perfect for your special occasion. Place the goblet on a mirrored coaster to create a beautiful reflection of light.

Good luck, and best wishes on your special day.

Lisa Robbin is the Director of Product Development for the giving candle, the maker of Heavenly Gems resin-based clear candles. Amish Furniture for Kids Summer Projects

Summer is coming, and the kids will soon be out of school. Mom's and dad's everywhere will soon here "I am board; I don't have anything to do." Give them a lesson and a project that will teach them a skill, and provide them a physical memory of time spent with mom and dad or one another.

My friend and his wife have four children from four to twelve. While they were visiting, my web site (www.stoveramishfurniture.com), they saw a few small piece of unfinished Amish Furniture. Now it would have been just as easy to pay a little extra and have the pieces finished, but they thought "Why not let the kids do it?" So as a summer project for the kids, they bought four different pieces of Amish Furniture. They then set aside a space in the garage for the projects. Each child was given a role in the finishing. The youngest two where thought to sand a clean each piece. The oldest two went to the library and the hardware store to find books on finishing the projects. They were all given a schedule and a planned completion time.

The kids were surprisingly really industrious. When I visited they reminded me of Amish Craftsmen, by the care they took in each of their operations. Those four pieces took roughly three weeks and about thirty-five hours to finish.

What really surprised my friends was that the kids turned there work into a business. They went out into the neighborhood and started collecting piece from their neighbors to finish. They did several chairs and a few tables, and made enough money for each to enjoy activities on vacation.

Amish Furniture is born of Amish Tradition. A tradition is something passed on from parent to child, a lesson that will be remembered for a life time. Amish families instill great values in their children, through hard work and lots of love. By purchasing a piece of Amish furniture, like my friends did, your family will become a part of that tradition. Your family will have a lasting piece of furniture that will provide a memory of when parent and child worked together and lessons where learned. Embroidery Designs and Thread Colors for Machine Embroidery Sewing

I wish that I had a nickel for each time I've been asked for the "exact" colors I used in aan embroidery design or for a conversion chart for specific embroidery thread brands - I would be a very wealthy woman!

Everyone seems to think that someone is going to knock on their door with a search warrant if they don't use the exact colors a designer used in the test sew out or the color numbers used in the stitch directions.

Not so - if you don't "think outside the box" and use colors that you enjoy, or just prefer, you are really missing the real fun of machine embroidery! Come to think of it, I don't believe that I've ever used the exact color on any design I've ever stitched in 6+ years-some because I didn't have the exact color & others due to a dislike of the colors used. Not only do you expand your design library, but you make each design a more personal experience & you sure won't see your embroidery friends wearing the same design!

Following are some tips to help you to "think outside the box":

1. One misconception is that changing the colors of a design violates a designer's copyright. I don't think that any designer has a "color change" clause in their copyright terms.

2. If you like the colors the designer used, don't fret if you don't have the exact same color in the thread brand used or the brand you prefer. Colors do not have to be exact-a color shade lighter or darker, or even a different tone will not be noticeable when the design is finished.

3. Learn to adjust colors for different fabric colors! Have you ever finished stitching a design on denim & wondered why it didn't look like the image shown on white? All colors take on a different look each time they are stitched on a different color background. If you have the background color change feature in your embroidery software, use it to help you determine when you will need to make a color switch to help the design show up better. If you don't have this feature in your software, keep various colors of felt or fabric on hand to test stitch your designs before putting them on a project. There's nothing worse than having a disappointing finished project.

4. Try stitching some designs in one color instead of the numerous colors a designer used. There are many designs that would lend themselves to an outstanding tone-on-tone design by just using your imagination! Tone-on-tone motifs make any design more "classy" on any garment or project.

The perfect example is a single pink rose with a green stem & leaves. Test that same rose using thread color/s in either lighter or darker shades of the fabric color. [If the design has shading, substitute darker shades of the same color for the shading.]

5. Look through your entire design library to see where you can change the look of a design by just changing the color! I doubt you have even one design that couldn't be given a "designer" look by a color change - even fruit or flowers!

Remember, "think outside the box", or you are missing out on the enjoyment & ability to expand your creativity to optimize the use of your designs! To see what I mean, take a look at the photo of my finished wind jacket post on our web site! I didn't look at the colors in my own stitch directions to sew these out - I just used the colors that I liked & would show up best on the jacket color.

Sandy Carter is the author of embroidery articles at embroidery designs by Thread Artist. The Unusual Characteristics Of Reverse Painting

Step by step over time, we can detect an important part of art history associated with investing in paint glass. It was a time announced that the use of this form of art mass ; Where people of the community can directly express their original form, where he lives, sees and feels in their daily lives. Even today, many artists working in glass have been inspired by their links with the production of furniture, glass manufacturing, engineering, teaching, or agriculture and the agriculture. Reverse paintings on glass often refer to reality, look more like accessories than as a necessity. That place tends to give the symbolic importance of its quality. It is a technique of art that refers to the surface instead of making a room or depth. In turn (due to lack of volume) also creates a lack of light and shade. Reverse paintings on glass are often rich in decorative, perhaps an expression of the artist of the need to be aware of the details and ornamentation. There is often a tendency to use the combination of complementary colors, orange, blue, red or green. Nature is often very much unlike painting on glass, especially in works of art created by people who live in rural farming communities. The simplified representation of the human form is also changing in these tables, and the lack of volume shadow or light creates an original work by accentuating the difference between realism and the art of a naive quite attractive. It would not be able to invest in respect of painting on glass as a very simplified form of art. The differences between a desktop printer at home and a career is much, but I want to focus on what is important. Woodworking: Protection When Working With Wood - Ignoring Could Potentially Harm Your Health Or Kill

carpentry: Safety Tips basic
three can be a dangerous undertaking if you're not careful and choose to ignore safety guidelines. A circular saw, router, or another material bit of energy can disfigure and even kill if not used correctly. Even hand tools, which should be very hard to improve performance, can cause severe damage. In addition, sawdust and wood smoke can harm the lungs if inhaled on a regular basis, especially if the wood was harvested from an orchard of trees or farm where the pesticides used to control insects. Fortunately, advances in equipment and security, has made it much easier to have a safe working environment. Many come with tools security on the road as a guard switches or emergency stop. Other items such as pens and boards of directors of the bank, the dogs can be purchased or very low cost. And elsewhere in the timber security costs nothing, but rather to practice and common sense. There are several important aspects of security in the form of wood, and if you have a store with various advanced power tools or work with basic hand tools in the basement or hobby room. Protect your
protect the body against accidents is an important aspect of timber security. Unfortunately, people are late or too comfortable or feel that the security team is an obstacle. A large majority of the shop accidents and injuries occur because people do not use their safety. Eye protection
a major problem when working with wood is eye protection. Forest tiles can fly when sawing, drilling, hammering, or any other work that through the equipment. Usually, it happens too quickly to close our eyes or look away. Safety glass resolve this issue. In addition, if the instruments to break or a part comes loose, eyes and forehead will be protected. Too many accidents have occurred only to brush off security concerns. It would be very difficult to implement any timber interests with one eye. A good pair of goggles or safety should be in the list of all safety equipment and should be used whenever you cut or removal of three of force or power tools. A pair of quality glasses cost about $ 12 and may last throughout life if they were supported from the outside and when not in use. Those who need vision correction, you can buy with safety classes Bifocal insert in the different strengths of less than 20 dollars. Ear protection
Some tools can be very noisy and can damage your hearing. Even the repetitive pounding sounds very strong. Many of us have long known that the three have difficulty hearing due to exposure to computers over the years. Protecting the ears of the high decibels is important, especially if you use the power of sound equipment such as saws, on a regular basis. Labor and earplugs, ears work even better, and a combination of both is ideal when working with equipment that produces high sounds in the high decibel range. Earplugs that cost pennies, and a series of works ears about $ 15 you can get with an antenna and radio, built in about 50 U.S. dollars. To collect dust
During the last decade or two extensive research has been done on the risk of inhaling dust particles and the three, and the results show that it can cause respiratory diseases. Treatment of three or three that came from commercial fruit are particularly volatile. It is important to capture and remove particles from the air and to protect them from breathing. A work space with good ventilation will help, but even if you work in an open space, you are breathing in the dust, if you're standing on the machine while cutting wood. If you plan to do much cutting, drilling or sand, it is better to have a machine that keeps the particles away from your face and prevent breathing in. There are several methods, whose base is a mask dust. These light-filtering masks a stock is likely over the nose and mouth and tend to be in place by an elastic band. Innovative design to improve breathing and deter fogging safety glasses. A box of 10 high quality dust masks cost about $ 10 Do not filter toxic substances in smoke. You can also buy a system for collecting dust or respirator that you carry in your head or strap on the body. These systems battery and allows you to move freely. Some people believe infringe discomfort and vision, but can be a way to protect your health in the long run if you spend a lot of time working with wood. Prices range from $ 50 for a basic system to more than $ 250 for a system that was also the head and goggles. Another option for collecting dust is located through a unit that accumulates during the work, then, or another computer connected to an electrical outlet. They range from $ 50 to $ 250, depending on the size, power, filtering and other factors. A shop system for collecting dust, with a 1 - engine power and the main ports of dust average of about $ 300 Environment Control
It is also important to prepare the working environment before starting a project. Be sure to take unnecessary points and take things from the floor. The less clutter, the less likely it is that something will be on the road, or traveling or be distracted. In addition, good lighting you will see your work (and fingers) better. The position of the lighting light of a store you will spend more direct and lighting exactly where it is needed. Try to find a place where people do not have entry and exit. For your safety and theirs, and it is particularly important when children are present. Make sure you connect your computer when you finish your work and put away dangerous items such as utility knives and saws. Avoid clothing that hangs loose, including long sleeves or skirts. Long hair must be removed too. Most electric utilities have a rotary motion that can recover and a wave Llave little tissue or a line of hair. Even if you've just made a quick cut or a year, all it takes is a second for things to go wrong. If you typically follow these steps each time you develop good safety culture. As one expert described the three, Safety is the turn signal. If you do when you get to do once, even if only the entry, and then you remember how in every situation, especially when there are cities. But not so comfortable with their working environment and you forget to think about what you do. Even if you used the same technique repeatedly, it is important to be aware of the proposals they make and the movement of tools. Another factor mentioned by several of the Carpenters was to have a phone close by in case an accident occurs, and you have to ask for help. If you use a mobile phone, do not forget to put in the same place every time so that you can send directly to him if necessary. It is also a good idea to hold a first aid kit training in the work area, just in case. Take your time
As we all know, when pressed to complete some mistakes usually occur. In three, it can be disastrous. Take your time, check your clamps, foot, hand position, the position of power and other variables before you start your computer. Even with hand tools, it is important to ensure that they do not see something through electrical or nails in hand. Do not force such a cut. If the leaves are displayed, and back again. Expect also a tool to stop completely before you take yourself out of it, or out of the woodwork. Most drills, saws and other tools to be able to take a few seconds to stop smoking after the power stop. If a group feels uncomfortable, do not. You can get a little jig in the stomach when you first view that the screw as an exercise, and this is normal. But if you are sensitive about and not keep their equipment or focus on what to do, running back and take a breath or find someone to help you in this stage. Another important aspect of timber security is to know your tools and use them properly and safely. For more information, please refer to the recent publication Wood Guide for Beginners is mentioned at the end of this article. How to Clean Your Jewelry at Home or Work

It looks like a million dollars, but after a couple of months, not the same Sparkle or see once (just like me, actually). So what can we do? The first is to ensure that it is safe to be cleaned! Of course, sensitive issues should be best left to a professional jeweler for cleaning. MEN Opal, emeralds and pearls are very vulnerable to damage Jewels in a vat of ultrasonic cleaning, since you can drag the pearls of their saddle Emerald and Opal and simply collapse. SOLUTION: Wipe you! But very careful. A complete solution with washing liquid (Clean of course, after doing the dishes on Sunday) and use an old toothbrush and clean carefully all assembly, the bristles of the brush to enter the establishment and clean behind the stones. But be careful as too much pressure to 'POP' rock the establishment, so if in doubt - take it out (of the cup, I mean). But even this is a good point. If lost something that other washing process, not only will you probably ever, it will be very unhappy with me to suggest something like that, in the first place. But if the stone came out in the wash, is to show that the property was so tired that come sooner or later anyway, to better decline in the catch of the stars so to speak, and get Local jeweler restore them safely back to you. See, I have only a favor ... there is no need to thank me yet. We will continue .... Do not water too hot, and absolutely not allow articles to suck all day. The beads are often trapped in their jewelry (rings, brooches, etc.) and if the item is a couple of years (for example, over 20) after the queues are not as good as they are today. A few minutes should be sufficient. Especially in a dry paper towel in a hot zone (during a Sunday drenched window is perfect) and, finally, wipe with a soft cloth and check everything before taking it again. It must be good for a few months. By the way: In general, the only difference in cleaning fluids used by the jeweler or bought a brand owner of ammonia! A small cloud of ammonia from the purchase or fashion Coles or your local supermarket, mixed with liquid washing machine is a big vacuum cleaner. It feels a little, but the results are perfect! Dirty diamonds? Just to keep the previous section: most valuable white stones used in past one hundred years or if imitation diamonds or simulators, or paste (brand name for glass) or spinels Sapphire White (corundum) and sometimes zircon (not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia CZ which is very modern). The first time you've bought a beautiful ring that glistened like diamonds, but little by little sad and boring. Queens, is the concern! Hand cream is the biggest culprit of all, because there is in rock and dull. Use precious stones, while his garden does not allow much, either, and certainly should not use their position as they sink (all fat that sticks to rocks). This is a big Properties of a diamond. Just rent the same way as we have suggested above, and with a brush teeth man. Will again quality sparkling in no time. After months is perfect, it is therefore not on it.
